An Introduction

Welcome to the MPLS Duo!

My name is Nicole and I am one half of this Duo. I've been playing tabletop and card games for as long as I remember. I paid careful attention to math class as a kid just so I would have the math skills to join my parents and older sister in their games of Monopoly.  From Risk to Connect Four, I grew up playing every traditional game imaginable, but our family favorite was Clue. Since then my love and interest in tabletop gaming has only grown and I look forward to sharing my joy in gaming with you.

Hello! My name is Reema, and I am the other half of MPLS duo. I can't remember exactly when it was that I started really getting into board games, but it was probably a few years ago. I know the first game that I played and really got into, apart from the classics that most people know of (Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, etc.) was Settlers of Catan. That was when my eyes were opened to how diverse games can be in their designs, themes, and mechanics. After that first game, I made a few friends who also enjoyed board games, and we played a lot of Ticket to Ride and Mafia/Werewolf. The rest is history.

I really appreciate games that are well designed. I have been trying to pay special attention to the aesthetic component recently, because I dream of one day being able to illustrate a game! A lofty goal, but a woman can dream :) My favorite boardgame art currently is that of the Oniverse series, which is illustrated by Élise Plessis.

We've been playing games together casually for years, but have only begun playing a variety of them consistently for the last couple. We, as I'm sure many of you are familiar, were put off by how many of the games we owned couldn't be played effectively or interestingly with only two players. Over time we've discovered a whole new world of games, and the harder we looked the more interesting and unique games we found. We're willing and even excited to explore the world of two player games and share that information with all of you-- just as we're hoping you can share with us!  More than likely we'll write lots of bonus blogs because how can we resist including so many great multiplayer and solo games?

Reema's Tabletop Collection

My little brother and I have accumulated this collection over the last few years. It lives in a cupboard in our basement and was recently moved to a larger one since we can't seem to stop collecting games! There are also some hiding in the back, or elsewhere since we play frequently. If you would like to see a full list of our collection, you can find me on BoardGameGeek.com @ecojabi. I thought, however, for this post, I would just highlight a few them.

Hidden Gem 1 : Mad Zeppelin!

A Hidden Gem: Mad Zeppelin! is a game that we found by chance.  A friend saw it on the clearance rack of our favorite local game store and thought it may have been a game she played with her tabletop group. She wasn't sure so she was hesitant to purchase it. We left it behind that day. Every time we visited the store for months we would see the game on the shelf and wonder if it was the mystery game. Finally I decided that I should just purchase the game and find out.  I'm very glad we did. Mad Zeppelin! wasn't the game she had played with her group, but I like the game a lot.  I enjoy the art and the characters. The game has some interesting mechanics that I haven't really seen before. It requires light strategy, but has some luck involved as well.  It's hard to get a true read on the game as many of the cards are clearly designed for larger groups and I've only played with two players, but it is still a lot of fun. Reema and I have decided that ...
