Nicole's Game Collection

Nicole's Board Game Collection

From my high school favorites of Cranium, Apples to Apples, and Dungeons and Dragons to my most recent purchases of Prospectica and Terraforming Mars, I've gathered a large (but insufficient) collection of games.  I think the majority of the games you see here were gifts from my friends and family, but many are purchases I've made for myself in the past couple years.

I like to think of Saboteur as my first game purchase. I learned to play it at a Nerdfighter meet up that also served as my first time tabletop gaming with strangers.  It opened up a whole new world of games for me, and I had a blast. It reminded me of all of the mafia games I played in high school and werewolf games in college, but taught me that games were constantly being produced and were well worth exploring. Even more importantly, that day taught me that it was possible to find fellow adults to tabletop game with. It helped me out of my dark days of little gaming. I also loved that it was travel size and has now lived with me in three countries and visited many more.

Since the event that brought me Saboteur I've been growing my game collection quickly. Some of my games come from my favorite local game stores, but I've also discovered a love for used games.  It started with finding the game Passport to Culture at a local thrift store. The game may not be popular, but it fit my interests perfectly. I had never purchased a thrifted game before and was nervous about the games condition. I was sure it'd be missing pieces, but for the price I was willing to take the risk.  It turned out to be not only a complete game, but one that I greatly enjoyed playing--even if it was a little dated. Since then I've perused the game shelves any time I happen to be at a second hand store. I like to think I've found some great games for ridiculously cheap. Puerto Rico, for example, was a game I'd been wanting to try playing for a while and I was very excited to try it for less than $5.00. So far each of my games have been in good condition and with all of the necessary pieces and I'm hoping to continue my good luck in future searches.

All in all, I'm very excited to introduce my game collection and I can't wait to share more stories and favorites in the future, but also discover even more great games to add.

An Introduction

Welcome to the MPLS Duo! My name is Nicole and I am one half of this Duo. I've been playing tabletop and card games for as long as I remember. I paid careful attention to math class as a kid just so I would have the math skills to join my parents and older sister in their games of Monopoly.  From Risk to Connect Four, I grew up playing every traditional game imaginable, but our family favorite was Clue. Since then my love and interest in tabletop gaming has only grown and I look forward to sharing my joy in gaming with you.  Hello! My name is Reema, and I am the other half of MPLS duo. I can't remember exactly when it was that I started really getting into board games, but it was probably a few years ago. I know the first game that I played and really got into, apart from the classics that most people know of (Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, etc.) was Settlers of Catan. That was when my eyes were opened to how diverse games can be in their designs, themes, and mechanics. Af...

Reema's Tabletop Collection

My little brother and I have accumulated this collection over the last few years. It lives in a cupboard in our basement and was recently moved to a larger one since we can't seem to stop collecting games! There are also some hiding in the back, or elsewhere since we play frequently. If you would like to see a full list of our collection, you can find me on BoardGameGeek.com @ecojabi. I thought, however, for this post, I would just highlight a few them.

Hidden Gem 1 : Mad Zeppelin!

A Hidden Gem: Mad Zeppelin! is a game that we found by chance.  A friend saw it on the clearance rack of our favorite local game store and thought it may have been a game she played with her tabletop group. She wasn't sure so she was hesitant to purchase it. We left it behind that day. Every time we visited the store for months we would see the game on the shelf and wonder if it was the mystery game. Finally I decided that I should just purchase the game and find out.  I'm very glad we did. Mad Zeppelin! wasn't the game she had played with her group, but I like the game a lot.  I enjoy the art and the characters. The game has some interesting mechanics that I haven't really seen before. It requires light strategy, but has some luck involved as well.  It's hard to get a true read on the game as many of the cards are clearly designed for larger groups and I've only played with two players, but it is still a lot of fun. Reema and I have decided that ...
